Iconic British brand Triumph has announced that the brand discovered the very first prototype motorcycle ever. The first-ever Triumph motorcycle was built-in 1901. According to the brand, Avid Triumph collector, Dick Shepherd found and made restorations to the 1901 Prototype. This has rewritten the history books as the 1901 Prototype opened a new chapter for the motorcycle manufacturer. The 1901 Prototype made its debut in the corresponding year before Triumph began official sales in 1902.
1901 Prototype – Details
The Triumph 1901 Prototype has always been referenced for the brand’s existence present in its advertising and reviews from the year 1901. The 1901 Prototype was a standard Triumph bicycle that came with a bolt-on engine from Belgian manufacturer Minerva. Minerva and Triumph both aimed to offer the public a newly built motorcycle.
In the recent past, Dick Shepherd began searching for the 1901 Prototype. Dick Shepard had been approached by the friend of another collector who has recently passed away. Dick Shepherd during the evaluation of the 1901 Prototype found out many unique details of the bike. During the evaluation the attributes of the 1901 Prototype did not match the characteristics of the first-ever production Triumphs.
However, the original collector had received a letter from Triumph, dated 1937, which outlined the bike’s origins and details. Also, the bike’s engine number coincided with the references in Minerva’s engine records. This marked the authenticity of the 1901 Prototype. Having established its authenticity Dick Shepherd dedicated his time restoring the 1901 Prototype.
