Bajaj Auto holds a major share in Pierer Mobility which is the parent company of KTM, Husqvarna and Gas Gas. The Indian two-wheeler and three-wheeler manufacturer also entered into a partnership with Triumph Motorcycles. Under the new agreement, Bajaj and Triumph plan to develop and produce small capacity Triumph motorcycles in the Indian market for sales in India and other emerging markets. Bajaj Auto also signed an agreement with the Government of Maharashtra to build its fourth production facility near Akurdi, Pune.
Husqvarna Vektorr and Triumph Motorcycles
Now reports suggest that Bajaj is likely to produce the Husqvarna Vektorr and other small capacity Triumph motorcycles at this new plant. The brand also announced that it would be a new electric vehicle manufacturing facility at Akurdi, Pune. Sources suggest that the new plant will be production-ready in 2022 which will produce the new Bajaj Chetak Electric. The electric scooter is also likely to underpin the upcoming Husqvarna Vektorr. The original ICE-powered Chetak was also first manufactured at Bajaj’s Akurdi plant when it began life.
Husqvarna Vektorr
Rumours suggest that Bajaj is upgrading the Chetak Electric in the Indian market with a more powerful battery. The Chetak uses a Bosch-sourced 4kW/14 Nm beltless solid gear drive electric motor. The power unit has a output of 4.08kW and a continuous output of 3.8kW. But this time around Bajaj is likely to have developed an indigenous electric motor. The new motor produces a 4.2kW and a continuous output of 4.0kW. The same power unit is also likely to be shared with the Husqvarna Vektorr.
Bajaj’s New Production Facility
Bajaj will be investing close to INR 300 Crore at the new production unit. The plant will be able to produce around 500,000 units per annum in addition to generating employment for over 800 personnel. The new facility will also come with cutting-edge robotic and automated manufacturing systems. The production facility will cover a total area of half a million sq. feet and draw investments from around INR 250 Crore.
