Lohia Machines Limited, popularly known as LML, could be planning to make a comeback. But this time, the brand will foray into the booming electric vehicle segment. The Kanpur-based brand has officially confirmed that it is currently laying down the “groundwork” required to compete in the Indian EV two-wheeler segment. The company operated mainly in the motorized domain before it was defunct. Now LML claims that the brand has found an investing partner “backed up by large investments”. Sources also reveal that the company has got proposals from various technology companies to launch LML products in the Indian market. LML electric plans to re-enter the Indian market with a disruptive product reigniting the light of the old establishment.

History of LML
The Kanpur-based two-wheeler manufacturer used to produce synthetic yarn manufacturing machines. The brand forayed into the two-wheeler business in 1984 when LML joined hands with Piaggio. The Italian premium two-wheeler manufacturer collaborated with LML, and together the brands set up a manufacturing plant to produce LML-Piaggio branded scooters in India.
In 1999, the partnership ended, but LML continued producing ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) scooters. The brand also exported certain models to the US market, such as the 150cc LML Star. LML also launched the 50cc LML Trendy based on the Benelli Scooty. In 2002, LML also launched motorcycles such as the LML Graptor and Freedom Prima. The brand also introduced four-stroke engine scooters in 2009 as well as a three-wheeler, LML Buddy, in 2016.
LML’s Financial Struggle
But due to low sales and tough competition in the segment, LML went through a financial crisis and was defunct. In 2018, the brand filed insolvency and the Hon’ble National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), Allahabad Bench, vide order dated 23rd March 2018, ordered for Liquidation of M/s LML Limited.
Details of the new LML electric scooter are scarce but, it is likely to compete with the Bajaj Chetak, TVS iQube, Ather 450, Ola S1, and the likes. LML will reveal more details on the same soon.
