Bhai Dooj: The celebration of the eternal bond of sibling love!

Brother’s are like headlights on a bike, they don’t help make the distance to home any shorter, but they light up the path and make the road to home happier. With this quote, CredR takes the opportunity to wish you all a very happy Bhai Dooj celebration.

As we all know, India is known for its diversity of religions, cultures, customs and traditions, which makes it casual for us to have so many unique celebrations throughout the year.

The bond of growing up with a brother or sister is unmatched. A brother or a sister can be the best friends, perfect crime partners, secret keeper and can even be your mortal enemy sometimes. But one can never actually put a label on a sibling relationship as it is built on equal parts of unconditional love and trust.

So the Bhai Dooj occasion is one such celebration in the Hindu traditions where the expression of love between siblings is honoured. The sister prays to the God almighty for the welfare of her brother and also for a healthy eternal bonding of being them. Bhai Dooj is celebrated after two days of the fantabulous Diwali festival every year and this year Bhai Dooj is celebrated on 16th of November 2020.

The mythology behind the celebration: In certain parts of India, it is believed that Lord Krishna, after defeating the evil king Naragasura went to visit his sister Subathra. Lord Krishna was given a grand reception ceremony by his sister on successfully defeating and banishing evil. She performed a simple pooja for her brother and applied the holy tilak on Lord Krishna’s forehead, which was a symbol of the prayers and love, Subathra had on her brother Lord Krishna. Thus Bhai Dooj is believed to be an important occasion for siblings based on this story from Lord Krishna’s life.

The Celebration: This celebration is usually celebrated at the sister’s place where she prepares the home for her brother’s arrival by decorating the household and preparing the brother’s favourite dishes. On the brother’s arrival, the sister takes an “aarthi” of her brother and prays for her brother’s safety, prosperity and all the future endeavours.
